As I eluded to on Friday Houston took a trip to the vet clinic. I knew that he most likely needed his hocks and stifles injected and I wanted to make sure that nothing else needed to be done. Sure enough Houston also needed his teeth done too.
I am not sure how many of you have taken your horses to clinics as opposed to having the vet coming out for a call but I really appreciated having the use of the facilities. First the vet poked and prodded as well as searched for soft tissue injuries. Then I was able to watch one of the clinic associates lunge H in their evaluation area and it was very clear to me that my initial thoughts had been correct. Houston was very tight through his hind end and it was giving his movement an almost stabby effect.
As expected Huey got his hocks and stifles injected with a Hyvisc/Steroid combo and I also purchased a vial of an Adequan like monthly injection that is a fraction of the cost 🙂
After the joint stuff we moved to the dental cage! This was also a scale and Houston ended up weighing 1,550lbs. He’s no light weight!
Once we got Houston’s mouth open the dentist discovered how badly he was in need of a float. I was able to see the sharp points and the dentist told me that he also had ulcers in his mouth. I feel awful that his teeth had gotten to that point as he had to have been uncomfortable.
After all of our adventures Houston needs to be off for 4 days. Due to Easter I most likely will not get to ride him for another week. Disappointing but by then hopefully his mouth will be healing as well.
Excited to have this boy all tuned up and can’t wait to see where we will go together this year.
Wow, he weighs almost twice as much as Connor! Not that that’s THAT surprising, but still. Big boy!
Haha! Connor is a different ballgame.
Holy shit. He weighs more than my Draft Cross did! Glad he got some TLC at the vet.
He’s not a small boy haha
Poor Huey! I’m so glad that you got the beefcake back!
Thanks Beka. I’m so happy it worked out for me to get him back.
Glad the beast will be feeling all better soon! He pretty much weighs the same as Stampede, we have a set of beefcakes.
They aren’t small that’s for sure!
Glad he should be feeling better soon. 🙂
Thank you!
Ulcers in the mouth! Ouch! Poor boy. I bet the time off to heal that up is super appreciated. 🙂
Definitely. I might start him back in a hackamore but we’ll see.
hopefully he’ll be right as rain when you are able to hop back in the saddle!
Glad Hue is feeling better
Same 🙂
Poor Huey! I’m glad he got his tune up, and I’m sure he’ll be feeling fantastic again after the holiday. 🙂
Probably too fantastic 😛
Poor Huey. Hopefully he feels much better soon.
He should be feeling pretty great now!
I always prefer hauling for injections–seems like their environment is easier to sterilize than a standard barn.
That’s a very good point. I’ve never had the option until now.
Poor dude! Glad you have him back and have gotten a handle on everything.
Me too!
Houston is very lucky to have you back 🙂 Glad he was able to get the full works and hoping he feels much better in a few days!
Luckily I have a super supportive hubby to help with unexpected costs. 🙂
