How Much Do You DIY

With the acquisition of my precious I have been hunting down different trailer service shops. Being basically brand new the trailer doesn’t need work so much as upgrades. You might remember that I got a Trailer Eyes system for Christmas. I finally had it installed shortly before trading in my trailer. Add that to the list of things that I want to eventually pimp my trailer out with and it would be quite the laundry list (read: $$$).

There are some things that I know I am not capable of accomplishing myself. Installing a RV Hook up to eventually power a window ac unit and awning for camping fall into that category. Things that I am just crazy enough to try though include the installation of fans. Since I know literally nothing about wiring things I turned to the trusty internet as my guide.

Luckily there are quite a few facebook members that happen to be atleast half as crazy as I am. There is even a group about Horse Trailer Conversions (aka DIY living quarters). While I don’t want to build living quarters there are a lot of useful tips in this group. One person even posted a how to on installing fans in the horse area of your trailer. Whether or not this is a good idea remains to be determined. In an ideal world I will be able to see the wiring for my lights easily, determine which line is hot and which is the ground and then just splice the wiring. I am most concerned about the drilling of holes into my trailer to mount the fans honestly! Hopefully I will have a good update for you guys in the next week!

Have any of you tried to do any of the above to your trailers? Tips or tricks for the not so handy rider?

Definitely never tried it, or honestly even considered it! My husband is really good with electrical stuff, so I would consider trying it if he was able to help me. Otherwise, I’m not that brave. Good luck!

That fb group is addictive! I bought a trailer with intent to redo the living quarters then realized I was going to be putting more money into it than I’d be able to get out of it when I sold it, so I gave up and sold it mid-demo. hahaha. It was also a rolling horse sauna, so I didn’t want to keep it anyway.

I don’t think I’m very technically savvy, so for wiring and stuff I stay far away! I’ll do some things, but I tend to stress a lot about getting it done perfectly. I am in awe of what you and others do to upgrade your trailers.

Haha I wouldn’t say that I am very savvy either but it sounds pretty idiot proof. I guess we will find out! This seemed like the smallest place to start. If I fail miserably I know not to attempt anything else.

My husband has made a few mods to my trailer (including installing screens not too long ago!) and fans are definitely on my wish list. So I’ll be eager to see how things turn out for you 😋

Wiring is not too bad! That’s totally something I’d attempt. I am starting to think generally about a trailer and a tack room space that I can make into LQ is definitely in my future.

I do nothing myself when it comes to my vehicles, trailer, or anything to do with electricity. I’m TERRIFIED of fire, so it’s best I don’t start one…
Hope things go smoothly for you!

My husband is big into DIY stuff. He doesn’t do a ton of wiring, but he does do some. He also welds, paints and builds things. Oh and fixes tires, which comes in super handy when you’re me and are constantly finding every random piece of shit with your Honda CR-V tires.

We had a horse trailer with a semi LQ area that someone else had done and it was actually pretty nice, though we never did use it for camping ourselves.

Is the trailer eyes transferable from one trailer to another, or would you just have to get a new system?

I think the fans sound like a great idea!

Oooh between similar FB groups, Pinterest posts and HGTV, I get a pretty fierce DIY itch to scratch. lol I haven’t tried any of the horse trailer mods, but I love that there are so many sites and Youtube videos available for guidance these days!
