Introducing Big Bertha

A few months ago I got some of my first real exposure to living quarter trailers. I have been in campers (holler at Rolex 2017) but I have never spent much if any time in the living quarters of horse trailers. I’ve only known a few people that even had LQ in their trailers. If you haven’t gotten to take a break from the cold (or heat because TX) on site at a horse show you are missing out.

When we went to the P Dutty clinic Trainer and a friend were riding in it was cold AF and they let us take breaks in their living quarters. It was so nice to be able to get warmed up and have a comfortable place to sit and relax for a bit. After taking Bea to a few horse shows and not being able to escape the “elements” except for in the truck I got to thinking that I would really like to have living quarters in my trailer.

My 4Star was my dream trailer though. I LOVED having the 2+1 layout. It offered so many options and so much space. After much internal debate it seemed like having a living quarter would be worth losing the +1 space though. I knew that I was not willing to give up having a straight load which unfortunately complicated things. Do you know how hard it is to find a straight load trailer with a full LQ and midtack??? They are pretty much unicorns.

I casually stalked Facebook and horsetrailerworld.com for a few months before deciding to post an ISO in a trailer group on Facebook. I anticipated that most of the replies would not fit my requirements… And I was right. Except for one. The very first reply was for a trailer that met my specs to the tee.

After messaging with the trailers owner, K, I found out that crazy enough she was wanting to “downsize” and get a 2+1! How lucky for me! I thought for sure that I would end up missing out on this trailer trying to sell my trailer first. We messaged back and forth for maybe a week exchanging pictures and videos of our trailers and discussing details. I had no clue what to look for in a LQ and am really thankful to have friends that helped me with what questions to ask and what to look for.

From there we had to figure out how and when we would do the exchange… You see Bertha (the trailer) was previously a NH resident. 30 hours away. THIRTY. I thought that might kill the deal. Before I had Bea I would have been planning a road trip! Now that I have a tiny sidekick a cross country road trip to buy a trailer just wasn’t in the cards. That wasn’t enough to stop us though! K and her husband agreed to take on the brunt of the drive (my heros) and one month later we were able to meet up in Jackson, MS for the trade.

There were a few bumps in the road (RIP to your truck, K) but all in all I am shocked by how smoothly everything went. Not only do I have an awesome new trailer I made some great new friends too.

I am super excited to go on my first trip with Bertha in a few weeks! In the meantime I have already changed a few things and am putting my own touch on the LQ – hello llama sheets! I will post more about the trailer projects as I go.

I didn’t realize you were able to do a trade! What perfect timing! Congrats on your new wheels!
Also, Big Bertha is my mother’s angry alter ego. Whenever we were in trouble, it was Big Bertha that came out….
